Day one in the Lake District: a rather less exciting picture of me at Hill Top Farm than would have been taken had someone else been holding the camera; a walk in the woods near Near Sawrey, during which my shoes got soaked and the kissing gate I was supposed to be looking for never materialized and I had to turn around and go back the way I had come rather than finishing the loop the book said to follow; my first ever Ploughman’s lunch at the Tower Bank Arms (not pictured, but famously immortalized in The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck); a trip to the grammar school (not pictured) and parish church in Hawkshead, both attended by the poet Wordsworth. And, of course, seeing Beatrix Potter’s original drawings at the Beatrix Potter Gallery in Hawkshead and obtaining a copy of the first edition of The Tale of Peter Rabbit, which I wrote about here.
