I was fortunate to attend last night’s SMU Block Party and lighting of Freedom Hall (with food trucks! and a fireworks display!). I will be the first to admit that I did not approve of George W. Bush’s actions as president of these United States. But I feel like others who share my sentiments about him are missing the point of presidential libraries, which, in addition to museums, also house the entire archives of the president they represent. In case I’m not being clear here, the G Dubs Library holds millions of documents that will be essential to scholarly research when they are opened. At the founding of his presidential library, the first one in the system, Franklin Delano Roosevelt said:
“… a Nation must believe in three things.
It must believe in the past.
It must believe in the future.
It must, above all, believe in the capacity of its own people so to learn from the past that they can gain in judgment in creating their own future.”
I’m proud that my alma mater and my city are home to an institution that will become a place where Americans can put that idea into action.

The State Fair of Texas starts today. The important question here is: How many people can I get to eat a Fletcher’s corny dog on my behalf?
